The Azhikkal port has been included in the National Maritime Development Programme (NMDP) has given a fresh impetus to the region's longstanding dream of developing the port into an all-weather one that can handle increased cargo traffic. The works for constructing 226-metre long wharf as part of the first phase of the project were inaugurated four months ago.The first phase of the port development will include construction of the wharf, transit sheds and port yards as well as installation of new cranes, laying of channel markings, master dredging and development of roads. The greatest beneficiary of the port development will be the timber industry here, which imports an estimated 5,000 tonnes of timber a month.Once the port becomes full-fledged with other facilities in place, the timber cargo at the port is expected to go up to 15,000 tonnes a month. The cargo movement to and from Lakshadweep also looks forward to an increased traffic with the strengthening of the facilities at Azhikkal.
