Guwahati Airport

Guwahati Airport is popularly known as Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. It is located in Assam and is the gateway to the north-eastern region of India. Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati is getting a facelift to make it better equipped to handle increased air traffic. The upgrade is slated for completion by the end of 2008. The overhaul will include both cosmetic and operational changes. The modern airport will include air link corridors, aero bridges and escalators. Work is also on to improve the quality of the taxiways and widening the shoulders of the tarmac with a view to handle increased air traffic. Once ready, the Guwahati International Airport can be opened to larger-sized international carriers. Cyber cafes, jewellery shops, mobile charging booths, and better quality seats in the lounge have also been included to make the airport truly international.

The government has decided to make Guwahati airport a regional hub for the North East region. Guwahati would be declared an international airport soon and an Indian Airlines flight would be introduced between Guwahati and Bangkok from January 1, civil aviation minister Praful Patel said. There would also be a significant increase in frequency of flights connecting Guwahati to other regions of the country. We are planning to make Guwahati airport a regional hub by January 2006 for the North-East region, Mr Patel told media persons after a meeting with members of Parliament (MPs) from the North-East here.

All ageing Boeings with the Alliance Air would be phased out and replaced by new Airbus jets by November next year. The four 50-seater ATR aircraft, operating the Alliance Air network in the North-East, would concentrate only on intra-regional connectivity, he said. He said that besides improving connectivity within the region, MPs also sought change in the flight schedule of the private airlines as well as Indian Airlines saying all flights from Guwahati connecting rest of the country were in the morning and there were no evening flights. The ministry was in talks with concerned ministries to have customs and immigration clearance facilities in Guwahati to facilitate the Bangkok flight.
