Safdarjung Airport,Delhi Flying Club was established in May 1928 with the purpose of training young men and women as aviators in India. Since then it has the distinction of training hundred of Pilots and Engineers: Prominent amongst the Alumni being Late Shri Biju Patnaik, Former Chief Minister of Orissa; Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, Former Prime Minister of India. Delhi Flying Club initiated the first air mail service of the country in the year 1931 and is also accredited with training Airforce Pilots in 60s and the Naval Pilots in 80s. It also participated in both the wars with Pakistan i.e. 1965, 1971.
