JNPA announces Zero Emission Trucking Initiative to decarbonize port operations

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India's leading container handling port, today announced a major sustainability initiative: the Zero Emission Trucking (ZET) program that aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality in and around its operations.

This ambitious project aims to convert JNPA's truck fleet from diesel to electric power, significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality around the port.

JNPA has already begun incorporating green energy by replacing Diesel. Electrically powered Interior Terminal Vehicles (ITV) (E-ITV). The plan outlines a gradual transformation: converting more than 15 trucks handling inter-terminal rail operations to E-ITV within six months, followed by more than 400 terminal trucks used in ship and shipyard operations within 2 to 3 months.

In addition, over the next three to five years, JNPA aims to shift more than 6,500 trucks transporting containers between terminals, loading stations and central parking spaces.

JNPA Chairman Unmesh Sharad Wagh highlighted that in recognition of the contribution Due to the significant pollution of port-related truck traffic, the JNPA seeks to achieve a fully electrified port, in line with national sustainability goals such as the Harit Sagar Guidelines and Mission Electric Vehicles 2030 (MIV 2030).

" Zero-emission trucks do not represent progress Not only technologically, but also a strategic imperative in our pursuit of a greener future. By adopting ZET and providing the necessary supporting infrastructure for charging stations within the port area, we are not only aligning with national sustainability agendas, but also reducing our environmental footprint

JNPA's ZET initiative represents an important step towards operating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly port, contributing to India's broader sustainability goals.

The Port Authority's commitment to environmental responsibility extends beyond ZETs, with ongoing efforts toward green energy use. for terminal operations. . The authority added that these initiatives reaffirm JNPA's commitment to innovation and efficiency, paving the way for a cleaner and greener future for the port and its surrounding communities.
