Webinar: Why is cold chain storage key to India's rise as a supply chain giant?

As India aims to become a global supply chain leader and a powerhouse in the pharmaceutical industry, a crucial element comes into the picture: cold chain storage. This temperature-controlled network ensures that perishable products, from fruits and vegetables to life-saving medicines, are preserved throughout their journey from farm to consumer. In today's interconnected world, robust cold chain infrastructure is no longer a luxury, but a necessity.

According to a study conducted by Nabard, there are currently 8,653 cold stores in the country with a capacity of 394. 17 lakh metric tons. Experts believe that this capacity is insufficient given the growth of the industry. This deficit translates into huge post-harvest losses, affecting farmers' income and leading to higher consumer prices. In addition, existing infrastructure often lacks proper maintenance, leading to inefficiency.

Fortunately, technological advances are causing a wave of change. Innovations such as prefabricated warehouses and solar-powered refrigeration systems are making cold storage more affordable and sustainable. Real-time monitoring systems ensure optimal temperature control and minimize deterioration. In addition, the emergence of cloud platforms is simplifying logistics and improving transportation routes.

However, India faces a major challenge: the shortage of cold storage capacity. According to estimates by market research firm IMARC, the Indian cold chain market size grew to Rs 1,81,490 crore in 2022 and is expected to reach Rs 3,79,870 crore in 2028, reflecting a CAGR of 12.3 percent. During the period 2023-2028.

Logistics & SCM will host a virtual roundtable on April 26, 2024 to understand the complexities of this sector and how technology is becoming a game changer. Be part of an informative panel discussion.
