BEML, in collaboration with Integral Coach Factory (ICF), will unveil a mock-up model of the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train at its factory in Bengaluru in mid-October. After approval of the design and evaluation of the full-size coach, production of the prototype will start.
BEML has secured a tender worth 6.75 billion and has been awarded the contract to supply ten Vande Bharat sleeper trains. The life-size model of the sleeping car is expected to be ready on October 20.
According to an ICF official, the creation of the model precedes the production of the prototype, which will include eleven AC III coaches and four AC II coaches. The official rollout of the train prototype is scheduled for this financial year.
The AC II level coaches are designed with superior aesthetics, with smooth panels, built-in skylights, a more accessible six-step ladder for the upper berths and spacious windows. The design emphasizes world-class appearance and prioritizes passenger safety by eliminating sharp edges.
Adapting the interior of the existing coach to the sleeper cabin design requires quick adjustments, as the shell and other components remain unchanged. BEML collaborated with a company to develop the interior design for sleeping cars based on ICF specifications, facilitating the creation of the real-life model.
The Indian Railways plans to accelerate production once the prototype is approved, with an aim to introduce Vande Bharat trains on long-distance routes. The Railway Ministry has entrusted the production of sleeper versions of the Vande Bharat to two companies - BEML and BHEL-Titagarh Wagons JV.
BEML, leveraging its expertise in manufacturing rakes for railway wagons and metros, will manufacture Vande Bharat rakes at its facility in Bengaluru. Meanwhile, BHEL-Titagarh will initiate the production process at their plant in West Bengal before handing over the work to ICF in Chennai. The joint venture aims to produce 80 rakes, production of which will commence at ICF after necessary approvals.
ICF has allocated space, machinery and provided essential facilities to facilitate coach work in Chennai. The factory will provide a warehouse, manpower and various facilities, including an automatic wheel line machine, spray booth and cranes, allowing contractors to efficiently assemble and test the coaches.
