The process of completely descending all components of the third tunnel boring machine (TBM) into the launch shaft under the ongoing construction of kanpur central metro station has been successfully completed. The final segment of the TBM, known as the 'Tail Shield', was carefully placed in the 18-metre-deep, 21-metre-long and 25-metre-wide launch shaft.
This TBM marks the third machine used in the Kanpur Metro Rail project and stands out as the pioneer TPM for the underground section connecting Kanpur Central and Transport Nagar. This particular machine will facilitate the construction of an approximately 1250 meter long tunnel along the 'Upline' from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj.
In the near future, an additional TBM will be lowered into the Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section, which covers approximately 4.24 kilometres, for excavation work in the downline.
The procedure for positioning the TBM in the launch shaft of the running Kanpur Central Metro station began with the first reduction of the approximately 120-ton front shield. Then the cutting head, the center shield and the screw conveyor were successively brought below the surface. Once inside the launch shaft, these TBM components are carefully aligned and mechanical elements and wiring are connected to each other to complete assembly. After this process, the TPM machine will be stationed along the 'upline' to forge a 1250-meter tunnel. The machine will then be used for excavations in the coming days.
