CKICP Ph-2 targets to upgrade key state highways in Industrial Corridor

The second phase of the Chennai-Kanyakumari industrial corridor project (CKICP) has designated three major state highways for significant infrastructure improvement.

The state's highways division will engage organizations to prepare a comprehensive project report (CPR), along with a feasibility study for the development of 115 km long industrial connectivity corridors in the central region that fall within the sphere of influence of CKICP.

The designated roads for this improvement are as follows: Trichy-Thuraiyur (SH 62) in Trichy district, Tiruvarur-Mannargudi-Muthupet (SH 202) in Tiruvarur district and part of Pudukottai-Sethubavachatram (SH 71) in Pudukottai and Thanjavur districts.

In the case of the Trichy-Thuraiyur highway, the current alignment is maintained. Although the city of Manachanallur already has a bypass, sources from CKICP have indicated the possibility of adding a new bypass at Pulivalam to avoid overburdened villages. The two-lane road will be extended to a dual carriageway. The project will take into account the required area of the land, in particular with regard to wooded areas. This road expansion initiative will provide better market access for shallot and tapioca farmers to sell their products. An official source mentioned that the preliminary project costs and the need for any diversion roads would be outlined in the CPR, based on the expected amount of car traffic. In addition, a 32km stretch of highway, stretching from Nochiyam on the outskirts of Trichy town to the Pirivu road roundabout near Thuraiyur city, is being considered for a similar upgrade.

A road safety activist, N Saravanan, suggested that after the widening project is completed, authorities should consider diverting Trichy-Salem buses through Thuraiyur for improved transportation options.
