Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has taken the proactive step of constructing a Bailey bridge over a canal on the eastern side of EM Bypass at the Metropolitan crossing. This strategic move aligns with the agency's objective to secure the site required for erecting two piers, bridging a 125-metre gap in the New Garia-Airport Metro corridor's viaduct. The bridge will facilitate pedestrians and two-wheeler riders in crossing the canal, named Moila Khal.
Prior to the transfer of ownership of the site to RVNL, the Kolkata Police Traffic Department is conducting tests to assess vehicle movements on the EM bypass, particularly around the 40mx16m barricaded area. The upcoming trials are crucial in determining the viability of the site. RVNL, which oversees the 32-km-long New Garia-Airport Metro project, has continued this site for the past six years. The agency expects a three-month timeline for the construction of piers 286 and 287, which are simultaneously working on the Bailey Bridge over Moila Khal.
The traffic department has determined that RVNL may only take charge of the Metropolitan crossing site after installing a 2-meter-wide bridge over the canal. The construction of the bridge, which will take three months, will not aggravate traffic congestion during the construction of the metro. In view of the December deadline for the metropolitan expansion of the new Garia-Airport corridor, RVNL has agreed to the construction of the bridge, initially requested for vehicle movements.
Earlier, RVNL was ready to build the last two piers when the traffic department pointed out the need for more road space for Garia-bound vehicles. RVNL had initially rejected the proposal for a canal-spanning bridge further south of the Metropolitan crossing, adjacent to the upcoming station of the New Garia-Airport corridor. RVNL's concerns about the foundation of the bridge, which may overlap with piers 284 and 285 that have already been built, were countered by police insistence on facilitating the flow of traffic during construction.
The same location was barricaded in April after the completion of piers 288 and 289 by RVNL. The construction of the remaining two piers (286, 287) was temporarily halted during this period. The ongoing efforts reflect RVNL's determination to meet logistical challenges and continue to develop critical infrastructure.
