The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that the longest road bridge in Assam, connecting Kamakhya Gate to Maligaon in western Guwahati, will be inaugurated on August 28, 2023. The bridge, which spans a 2.63 km stretch, has reached a total construction progress of 93 percent as of August 1, 2023, at a cost of Rs 4.2 billion.
The foundation and substructure of the main bridge, along with the Pandu arm, have been fully completed. However, only two of the 124 deck plates in the superstructure, as well as a deck plate in the Pandu arm, remain unfinished. Significant progress has been made in the approach components, with a reinforced earthen rampart that is 95 percent complete at the Maligaon end, 80 percent at the Kamakhya end, and 95 percent at the Pandu end. In addition, 1,020 meters of the 1,600-meter-long drain has been successfully constructed. Still to be completed are the service road and parking facilities.
Although the official deadline for the completion of the viaduct is October 23, 2023, the vehicle movement will begin on August 28, 2023, contributing to the alleviation of traffic congestion in Western Guwahati once the project is fully completed.
