Delhi Railway stations set for Mega Makeover under ABSS Initiative

New Delhi :

As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) initiated by the central government, a major transformation is in the works for around 14 railway stations in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). This overhaul is part of a broader effort that includes 508 stations across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the train station's redevelopment initiative on Sunday, laying the foundation stone for the project. Among the stations covered by Northern Railways, there are a total of 71 in the region, 14 of which are within the Delhi-NCR zone. However, notable stations such as New Delhi and Anand Vihar will not be included in this particular endeavor.

According to a representative of Northern Railways, both the New Delhi Station (NDLS) and the Anand Vihar Station will undergo various projects. The NDLS renovation is of considerable size, following a previous failed tender. Subsequently, a new call for tenders was issued and the first discussions took place. In the case of Anand Vihar, the plan includes an extension of two railway lines.

The renovation blueprint highlights several key goals, including the modernization of stations, the installation of new railway lines, full electrification, and an improvement in both passenger safety and infrastructure security.

Officials revealed that the initiative involves removing unnecessary structures along railway lines, improved lighting, station upgrades with parking facilities and improved accessibility for persons with disabilities. The plan also includes the installation of elevators, escalators, halls, modern waiting rooms and retail spaces, all designed to enhance the passenger experience.

Within the Northern Railways domain, the 71 stations are divided as follows: one in Chandigarh, one in Himachal Pradesh, 21 in Punjab, 10 in Haryana, 2 in Uttarakhand, 28 in Uttar Pradesh, 3 in Jammu and Kashmir and 5 within the Delhi-NCR region.
