According to sources, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has set an internal target to build at least 45 km of roads per day this year. At this pace a record-breaking 16,000 km Roads will be built in a year's time. India is expected to build highways this fiscal year, the construction of the longest road ever in one year, despite the prospect of a global economic recession.
Despite the fact that the ministry covered a record 13,298 km (36.4 km/day) in the pandemic-affected year 2020-2021, the ministry did not meet its road construction targets for the previous two fiscal years, leading to the setting of this difficult target. After that, the speed dropped to about 29 km in FY22, and it is predicted that it would remain there in FY23. According to data available until February 2023, the previous financial year saw only 24 km of daily road construction, leading to 8,064 km of highway construction.
As delays in approvals, land acquisition and rising input costs can hamper some unprofitable road projects with unattractive traffic forecasts for investors, the official target could be set slightly lower than the government's desired daily construction rate of 45km, closer to last year's 12,200km. All road construction companies have been asked to speed up the construction of highways and address any problems that prevent this. The ministry also plans to hold a number of high-level interministerial conferences with state government officials to address project-related issues and begin work immediately.
