S Rajesh Kumar, the Congress MLA from the Killiyoor constituency, made a strong plea to the DMK government to ban the transport of gravel, blue metal and M Sand from Kanyakumari district to Kerala for construction purposes. During the discussion on applications for subsidies to the Water Management Department in the Assembly, Kumar emphasized that heavy vehicles transport large quantities of these minerals to Kerala outside the permitted limits, as quarries are prohibited in the neighboring state.
Kanyakumari District is located in an ecologically sensitive region along the Western Ghats and the transport of these minerals causes significant concerns for the local population. Kumar stressed that while the district needs gravel, blue metal and M Sand for development projects, the government must make a policy decision to ban their transportation to Kerala and instead allow the operation of quarries according to regulations to meet the district's needs.
Kumar also expressed concern about the removal of thousands of tons of sea sand for separating minerals, leading to the erosion of fishermen's residential areas. He urged the government to take measures to address this issue and protect the livelihoods of the fishing community. Kumar's statement highlights the need for a balanced approach to ensure sustainable development without compromising the ecological integrity of the region.
