At Gujarat's Deendayal Port, Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways officially inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth INR 2.70 billion. Speaking at the event, the minister noted that these projects would improve the port's infrastructure, as well as its logistics capabilities and the general economic growth of its hinterland. Sonowal also said that the developments will increase the port's capability for handling cargo, in addition to speeding up the turnaround time for ships and cargo evacuation.
“Deendayal Port is the number one port of the country in terms of cargo handling and through these projects its capacity will be increased which will be beneficial for the entire region," he added. In addition, the minister opened oil jetty number 7, which cost INR 739.2 million. “The jetty will enhance the liquid handling capacity, by 2.00 MMTPA, of mainly edible oil, and fulfil the future requirements and will reduce the turn-around time of the vessels. This T-shaped Jetty is 110 m long and 12.40 m wide and can handle the large size of vessel up to 65000 DWT and 14 m depth," the ministry reported.
During the construction period, the project generated about 1,000 indirect jobs and more than 250 direct jobs, the statement said. The minister also laid the foundation stone for three projects: the development of a back-up area of oil scaffolding numbers 8 to 11, costing INR 984.1 million, the construction of a dual carriageway from LC236B to C.J-16 costing INR 670 million, and the building of a domed storage shed in a loading jetty that costs INR 396.6 million.
