"Southern Railway has begun the reconstruction of this station to provide travelers with advanced infrastructure and facilities similar to those found at airports. The contract for the reconstruction was awarded in August 2022 and with preparatory work now underway, it is moving forward steadily ”, said the spokeswoman.

More than 90 scheduled train services are handled daily at Ernakulam Town railway station. According to him, the station is classified as an "NSG-3" station and receives 1.02 crore passengers annually, or an average of 28,000 passengers per day. Kottayam district is crossed by the Ernakulam Town to Kayankulam railway line which has major stations at Kottayam, Tiruvalla, Chengannur and Mavelikkara. “On 29th August 2022, Rank Projects and Development Pvt Ltd was awarded an EPC contract to construct the redevelopment of Ernakulam Town railway station at a cost of INR 1.50 billion. The project will be completed in 36 months,” said the spokeswoman.

“It is also planned to build a multi-level car garage, a new pedestrian bridge and an air concourse with skywalk connectivity. It has been proposed to replace the current building at the West Terminal with a three-story structure with a mezzanine floor and a built-up area of ​​14,506 square meters.The ground floor will provide first-class passenger services, including restrooms, cloakrooms, baby changing rooms, feeding areas, assistance desks, shops and kiosks, to facilitate carefree passenger movement, according to the spokesman.Passenger waiting areas with amenities such as restaurants, shops and toilets will be on the first floor.The sky hall, which has recently installed escalators and elevators for the comfort of the travelers, is the main feature of the floor.
