EV Velu, the Minister of Highways of Tamil Nadu urged Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Roads and Highways, to begin construction of the elevated corridors proposed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the Tambaram-Chengalpattu NH, Sriperumbudur-Poonamallee, and eight-laning Chengalpattu-Tindivanam sections in 2023.

Velu, in a document he sent to Gadkari in New Delhi, stressed that the NHAI-operated toll plazas in Tamil Nadu whose contract time had expired should be closed as soon as possible. According to a statement, the minister also informed the union minister about the inconvenience caused to residents by the Kappalur toll plazas in Madurai and Krishnagiri districts. Velu proposed that the NH be increased to four lanes and eight bypasses, as the Salem-Ulundurpet section alternates between two and four lanes, frequently resulting in catastrophic accidents.
