The Valankulam Road (Sungam Bypass Road) expansion project in Coimbatore has been completed about 35% of its original length through the State Highways Department and Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC). In front of the bank of Valankulam tank where there are beautification projects is being carried out as part of the Smart City projects, the government is extending the road on one side and erecting retaining walls at a cost of about INR 120 million. About 58 tamarind trees will do that be cut down to make way for the expansion project.

To avoid frequent accidents, the department also has plans to build a 500 meter service road from Sungam Junction to Sivaram Nagar via Nehru Park and asked the CCMC to do so pave a service road from Sivaram Nagar to Shanmuga Nagar via Pari Nagar. The idea was approved by the city council and work will start soon.

About 1,600 meters from the Sungam Bypass Road between Sivaram Nagar and the Valankulam Boat House Road will be widened and concreted approximately 5 meters on one side of the road Retaining walls are being built at an estimated cost of INR 10 million, according to a senior official of the SH department.

“The Sungam Bypass Road is being enlarged due to the increased traffic congestion caused by the development of the coastlines of the Valankulam water body under the Smart City projects. A pedestrian Routes and parking spaces will be used on part of the enlarged areas. The project is currently approx 35% is complete and work will be completed by March 2023, the official said.

According to CCMC sources, the municipal organization would pave a frontage road that would be roughly 520 meters long and 6 meters wide for INR 5.2 million. The route, which starts from Sivaram Nagar, will come to a finish at Shanmuga Nagar on the Sungam Bypass, next to the KTM showroom.
