The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is implementing several measures to reduce the dust problem at the construction site of Mumbai Metro's Mandale depot in Mankhurd. The depot is an integral part of the 23.64 km Mumbai Metro Line 2B between DN Nagar and Mandale which is said to be the largest metro depot in Mumbai.
The preventive measures include sprinkling water on site to control dust, using machinery and equipment designed to minimize air pollution, covering vehicles with loose excavated material with tarpaulin, stacking the excavated material to reduce dust emission disposal of all excavated materials regularly at designated locations etc.
Furthermore, the wheels of outgoing vehicles are cleaned from the site, so that no soil is carried from the site to the outside roads. A specially designed mechanism at batch plants automatically cleans the wheels of outgoing vehicles.
Air quality (AAQ) and sound quality (NQ) levels within the area of this depot were recorded according to Central Pollution Control Board standards.
The MMRDA is the implementing authority of the project. SVR Srinivas, the MMRDA commissioner, said that the authority is taking utmost care in the construction of the Mandale depot. "The aim is to complete the project on time and the intention is to expedite the structural works," he said.
