The Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, which is "semi-constructed", has somewhat reduced traffic congestion. Due to the increase in the number of road accidents, the authorities are having a hard time. The Indian National Highways Authority (NHAI) has now opted to use artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor traffic. Sridhar, the project director at NHAI, claims that AI cameras will be helpful in reducing speeding and accidents.
“We plan to install AI-enabled cameras for every 500 meters of road section. We have written to the center requesting permission for this under the intelligent transportation system,” he said. If the center approves the proposal, a command center would be set up in Bengaluru or Mysuru to monitor the CCTV footage.
According to the policy, since the phased opening of the highway in the past three months, there have been at least 65 accidents, resulting in 22 deaths. That is why it is important to guarantee lane discipline in addition to accident prevention. Authorities believe they can monitor the entire 118km stretch of the highway if there are cameras every 500m. Operators in the control room can immediately notify the ambulance and the local police in the event of an accident or calamity. There are plans to reduce speeding offenses. We are developing a system to integrate speed radars so that speeding violations are automatically recognized and a fine is issued in the name of the offender, according to an official.
“There are plans to limit speeding. We are working to put in speed radars" - an official.
The maximum speed on the highway is currently 100 km/h. However, the speed limit has been set at 80 km/h on various routes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has posted permanent speed limit signs on the median strip.
“It is customary to pay attention to speed limits. But it is better to drive below 100 km/h, because traffic accidents should be avoided. There are many loopholes as we notice many vehicles coming from the opposite direction and this can be a barrier to vehicles zooming on the highway,” said Sudesh S, a commuter.
