The National Highways Authority of India has approved a proposal to construct a ring road linking Angamaly and Kundannoor, easing traffic congestion on the NH-66 Edappally-Aroor route.
According to the plan, the 50 km highway will be constructed as a greenfield project under the Union government, Bharatmala Pariyojna.
The bypass runs from NH-544 in Angamaly through 17 villages in the taluks of Aluva, Kunnathunad and Kanayannur. The ring road will pass through places 10 km away from the existing highway.
A private agency helped determine the preliminary alignment of the bypass. According to NH-66's special deputy collector, Padmachandra Kurup, a notification will be made after determining the survey numbers based on the preliminary alignment.
In 2016, a proposal was made for an alternative bypass due to traffic congestion on the Edappally-Aroor route.
The opening of Lulu Mall has resulted in significant traffic congestion at the Edappally intersection. Apart from that, several shopping malls, car dealerships, and other establishments have sprung up along the route, creating heavy traffic.
