More than 300 kilometers of state highways and major district roads in Assam, including six road segments in the western, central and southern regions of the state, will be upgraded thanks to a $300 million loan approved today by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The project will add new climate- and disaster-resistant structures and double the number of lanes on state highways and major district roads. Pedestrian and public transportation infrastructure will be built, highways in flood-prone areas will be elevated, and landslide measures will be added in hilly and mountainous areas.
This project would improve the highways connecting the SASEC corridors and borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh, which is expected to lead to increased cross-border trade and transportation.
The project supports the Jogighopa multimodal logistics park under construction, as well as a future park in Silchar that will serve inland waterways, inland railways and airports.
