The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) began "rapid road works" on Tuesday on a 500m stretch at the Binnamangala junction where 100 Feet Road and Old Madras Road meet. The pilot project, which involves paving concrete slabs 1.5 meters wide, 2 meters long and 7 inches thick on the road, is seen as an alternative to white-topping (covering an existing road with a layer of Portland cement concrete).
According to officials, slabs have been laid for a 100-meter stretch and the remaining work will be completed on Saturday. During white-topping, car traffic is disrupted, resulting in huge traffic jams. To avoid this, the BBMP is putting into practice an innovative technology known as rapid road works. Hardening is no longer necessary. If successful, this technology will be implemented in other parts of the city.
