Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) will prepare a comprehensive transportation plan for the metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. The Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) has been commissioned to prepare the project, including assessing suitable metro systems for these cities.
A detailed project report will be prepared after the submission of a comprehensive transport plan by March. Meanwhile, authorities will begin preparatory work for metro projects, including launching a tender for the construction of overpasses in Sreekaryam.
KMRL director Loknath Behra has sought the support of the district administration and the mayors of both cities for the project. The metro system suitable for a city is determined based on the number of passengers. It was previously suggested that Metro Neo or Metrolite projects should be carried out in Kozhikode as a conventional metro project would cost about Rs 2 billion per kilometer. The cost of Light Metro has been estimated at Rs 1.50 billion per km and Metro Neo at Rs 600 million.
