Toys, consoles and clothing items totaling £100 million ($108 million) could be disrupted by the latest strike action ahead of Christmas as Felixstowe workers prepare for renewed industrial action from September 27 to October 5, 2022, according to the analysis of ALPS Marine by Russell Group, a data and analytics company.
Nearly 2.00 workers in the UK's largest container port are again engaged in a wage dispute as of today.
“A strike in Felixstowe in August led to diversions of ships to other UK and European ports,” said Suki Basi, Russell Group general manager. “A month later, we expect something similar to happen as renewed strikes will disrupt retailers and businesses waiting for essential imports at one of the busiest times for the UK economy.
“Companies cannot predict when strikes will occur, but if they do occur, they can predict the likely impact on their supply chain through the use of increasingly sophisticated forward-looking connected trade flow analytics. This would help them make alternative arrangements that ultimately ensure business continuity and even viability.” to protect."
The economic value of all imports into Felixstowe during the period would be £532 million ($574 million), while the goods exported from Felixstowe would be £415 million ($448 million), representing the combined import/export flow of trade through the port would bring in £947 million ($1 billion), the report said.
