To crack down on reckless and negligent driving and drink-driving, which are a leading cause of traffic accidents and deaths, the Goa government is considering installing CCTV cameras to monitor and identify vehicles that violate traffic rules.
Speaking to the media this week, Prime Minister Pramod Sawant said poor road conditions alone cannot be considered the reason for the increasing number of road accidents and deaths. “According to the available data from 2012 to 2021, an average of 250 people die each year in road accidents… data shows that a majority of accidents and deaths occur at night after 10 p.m. to early morning. These are due to drunk driving," he said.
"I agree that road conditions are bad, but not all accidents are due to bad roads," he added.
Sawant said both locals and tourists should follow the traffic rules for their own safety.
The Chief Minister spoke as he distributed compensation to the road victims. A total of 23 families of the deceased were each awarded compensation of Rs 200,000.
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho spoke about government plans to install CCTV cameras along major traffic interchanges and accident-prone areas.
