In order to make available the land currently occupied by slums and thereby facilitate the operations of Mumbai airport, the redevelopment of the slum will be carried out in the same place according to the cluster development model. This becomes part of the freed land that is handed over to the airport.
This was announced by Maharashtra's deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who owns the housing portfolio, in a debate in the state assembly about the currently deteriorating state of infrastructure in Mumbai and the slow pace of slum redevelopment and rehabilitation.
Fadnavis has not worked out which slums will be redeveloped first and how much freed land can be transferred to the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which operates the airport. However, a senior housing department official told a newspaper: "The government, after talks with MIAL and the Airport Authority of India, will decide which slums will be redeveloped first. The slums are generally located in the aviation zone, on land that is intended for the construction of a rehabilitation section and on land designated by the airport operator for commercial exploitation.
However, slums outside these three categories may not be eligible for cluster development as of now.”
He added that the rehabilitation of slum dwellers will free up 200 acres for aviation and commercial development.
