As part of its ambitious digital vision, the Indian government has launched 5G trials in India to pave the nation's path in technological advancement. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) The Government of India, New Delhi was tasked with conducting 5G testing in selected locations across the country – developing best practices and guidelines and zeroing in on required policies - / regulatory interventions for the implementation of small cells using street furniture.
In line with this, four sites across the country were chosen for 5G testing, including Delhi Airport, Bhopal Smart City, Bangalore Metro and the Deendayal Port Authority. According to a release from DPA, it has become the only port (Minor, Major or Private) to be 5G ready ahead of the planned launch of 5G networks across the country.
DoT (Department of Telecommunications) officials visited the port along with officials from telecom service providers and infrastructure providers including Indus Towers, Vodafone, Jio, Airtel and BSNL on April 28, 2022 for the kick-off, meetings and investigation, armed with a goal to initiate a 5G trial within 90 days of the kick-off meeting.
The initial scope of the pilot at DPA only included 4 street cells/furniture and the same ones were identified to carry out the 5G pilot. To prepare the port for the future, the CBP board believes it was essential that all street furniture be identified in the Adapted Delimited Area within the port, so that sufficient 5G street cells are installed in the operational area of the port. , so that to D.P.A. 5G ready for the national rollout of 5G.
This request from the port was accepted by Dr. P.D. Vaghela, TRAI, chairman, quoted DPA's release on Friday. Meanwhile, the DPA administration and officials have extended all possible support, administrative approvals and legal clearances on a war basis to allow the use and access of the required street furniture [electricity poles, high mast structures, harbor buildings] to aid this action.
The port has also made 48-core fiber optic networks, electricity, high mast towers, etc. available and made available to the 5G pilot team along with manpower, material and machine to complete the project in record time. The same has been accomplished on July 21 according to the release.
This development makes DPA the first port location in India to be 5G ready, as radiation started at the first location and all other locations will be activated by the end of the month.
A committee was formed to address this development made up of dignitaries and leaders such as Manish Lodha, Joint Advisor, Regional Office Jaipur (member), Telecom Regulatory Authority of India; Nandeesh Shukla, IRTS, Dy. chairman-DPA; Hemant Panday, Managing Director (TSP Member), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd; Satish Kumar Jha, CTO Gujarat (LEAD TSP), Vodafone Idea Ltd; Manoj Kumar Singh, Chief Regulatory Officer (LEAD IP1), Indus Towers/Bombay Gas.
The project is expected to help the port fulfill its vision of becoming an efficient 'mega port' by experimenting with new automation processes on 5G networks that will improve cargo handling efficiency.
