Waiting time in major ports in India is expected to decrease if the ambitious goals of Sarbananda Sonowal (Shipping Minister) are met.
In fiscal year (FY) 2020, it took an average of 0.95 days for a cargo ship to dock in a major port. The time a ship waits before docking in a port is known as the pre-docking period.
The lead time of containers in major Indian ports is estimated to be approximately 26.5 hours. It is a reduction of about 45 hours in 2013-2014.
The shipping minister told the media that there should be no delays for incoming or departing cargo.
It means that there is no waiting for vehicles carrying cargo or ships.
He said this would mean reducing the current waiting time for docking in busy ports, which is about a day and a half.
Sonowal said public-private partnership (PPP) projects in greenfield port development should be the top priority.
He said they should consider the PPP model as it frees up public money for the construction of new ports. It would enable the inhabitants of coastal areas to live more comfortably while also making it easier for companies to get the best services.
