Delhi Airport to induce EVs at airside in four months

New Delhi :

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) told media that Delhi airport has decided to replace all of its airport vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) in the next four months for its airside operations under the Green Transportation Program, targeting on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per year from airport activities.

The plan is to install 62 EVs on the airside of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, including the runway, taxiway and apron during the arrival and departure of flights. It will help reduce about 1,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

DIAL announced the Green Transportation Program on World Environment Day.

The airport will also install high voltage and fast charging stations in strategic locations to meet the demands of these vehicles and other airport stakeholders.

For this green initiative, DIAL has previously worked with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to make the required changes to the EVs to install airport-specific equipment. The company is working with the IGI stakeholders for smoother adoption of EVs at the airport. DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said the company aims to make Delhi Airport a Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport (NZCEA) by 2030. It plans to phase out all petrol and diesel light vehicles from the airport. and use EVs instead.

He said the airport plans to source electricity from renewable energy sources to ensure even the charging process is zero-emissions.

He said the introduction of electric vehicles for airport operations management is a unique initiative by an Indian airport to ensure cleaner transportation.

DIAL recently facilitated electric buses to transport passengers from Terminal 3 to the Passenger Transport Center (PTC) building.
