Titagarh Wagons and Texmaco Rail and Engineering are two of the five companies that secured an order of Rs 23,500 crore to supply 60,000 wagons to the railways.
The other companies awarded the contract include Oriental Foundry, Hindustan Engineering Industries and Commercial Engineer and Body Builders Co (CEBBCO).
These wagons should be delivered by fiscal year 2025-26.
Titagarh Wagons got the bulk of this order of 24,177 units which cost about Rs 9,249.48 crore. Texmaco Rail secured the second highest order of 20,067 units costing about Rs 7,615.18 crore.
The existing capacity of wagon manufacturers in India is about 30,000 units per year. It was underutilized because the Indian Railways procurement amounted to about 9,600 wagons per year.
The Indian Railways operate about 300,000 units (wagons) and the new ones are said to supplement this capacity.
