New Radio Club Boat Jetty to Ease Boat Traffic at Gateway of India

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has unveiled plans to improve passenger amenities at the Radio Club Jetty. These include a cafeteria, ticket counters, parking, a landscaped green area and an amphitheatre.

Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India, a bustling hub for boat traffic, is set to get a major upgrade with the addition of a new passenger jetty at the nearby Radio Club. The project, which has a completion timeline of around 30 months, is intended to ease congestion at the Gateway of India, which sees around 2.5 million passengers embark and disembark each year.

The MMB recently awarded the contract for the Radio Club Boat Jetty project to RKEC Project, which is a significant step towards modernizing the city's maritime infrastructure.

An MMB official explained that the current reliance on the Gateway of India by all boats has led to overcrowding, increasing the risk of accidents. The official stressed that the new jetty would bring order, provide modern facilities and improve safety for passengers.

This busy maritime hub has long struggled with inadequate infrastructure, resulting in overcrowding and safety issues, especially for elderly passengers who face challenges boarding the ship. Once operational, the Radio Club Jetty is expected to divert all boat traffic away from the Gateway of India, significantly reducing congestion. The new facility will have the capacity to accommodate up to 20 boats at a time, allowing for smoother and more organised operations. Furthermore, the jetty is designed to protect the historic Gateway of India from further wear and tear from heavy use.
