CMA CGM Group and Suez have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to form a long-term partnership focused on biomethane, a renewable fuel produced from waste recovery, aimed at decarbonizing shipping in Europe. The collaboration will explore three key areas:
Biomethane supply: Suez will supply up to 100,000 tonnes of biomethane annually by 2030. CMA CGM will use this for its gas-powered ships, which will significantly reduce CO2 emissions in maritime transport.
Investment in production: Both companies will set up a joint investment structure with an initial financing of €100 million to develop biomethane production sites in Europe. These sites will supply both CMA CGM and other players in the industry.
Research and development: The partnership will promote research into innovative technologies, such as hydrothermal gasification, to enhance biofuel production capacity.
CMA CGM aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. It has invested $18 billion in 131 ships that can use low-carbon energy, due to be operational by 2028. Meanwhile, Suez’s circular solutions have helped avoid 6.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions by 2023, as the company converts millions of tonnes of waste into energy each year.
This partnership marks an important step towards decarbonising the shipping sector and increasing Europe's energy independence.
