The government plans to transform India Post into a logistics company, targeting 50-60% growth in revenues in the next 3-4 years, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said. He made the announcement at an event of the Public Affairs Forum of India in New Delhi.
Scindia noted that around 25,000 villages without mobile networks will be connected by next year. "The postal department is making great progress. Our current turnover is around Rs 12,000 crore per annum, and I aim to increase that by 50-60% in the next few years," he said.
He stressed that India Post has the potential to provide services directly to rural and remote areas, and emphasised the need to diversify beyond traditional postal services. “We need to transition from a mail and letter company to a logistics company. This involves optimising routes and exploring multiple transportation options,” Scindia explained.
On infrastructure development in the Northeast, the minister unveiled substantial investments including Rs 48,000 crore for road networks. He said 6,000 villages in the Northeast and a total of 25,000 rural areas still do not have mobile towers.
“We are using the USO fund to implement mobile networks in all 25,000 villages by mid-next year, ensuring that no village is left without mobile connectivity,” Scindia added.
