The Kolkata Metro has successfully replaced the steel third rail with an aluminium counterpart at the Girish Park rail link along the Dakshineswar-New Garia corridor. This third rail powers metro trains and the switch to aluminium promises a significant improvement in energy efficiency.
In a statement on Sunday, Metro Railway announced the completion of a 200-meter track replacement on Saturday evening. The new third aluminum rail is expected to reduce the voltage drop in the system, resulting in less energy loss and faster acceleration of the train.
Metro Railway has set a two-year timeline for complete replacement of the third rails, targeting an 84% reduction in energy loss, resulting in a saving of Rs one crore per year per kilometre of track.
