India has launched a nationwide review of its ports to identify operational and infrastructure shortcomings, government officials said. The review will cover all major ports with the aim of scaling up capacity, preparing them for larger vessels and integrating green energy solutions.
A senior government official revealed that the review will help establish benchmark standards and best practices for ports, which can be applied across the country. Besides improving infrastructure, the government plans to rank ports and set common minimum standards.
This initiative is part of the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the long-term Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. The review also aims to optimise cargo handling and reduce vessel turnaround time. With new technologies emerging since Vision 2030, the review will look into green infrastructure projects such as green hydrogen storage and renewable energy generation, besides futuristic technologies such as methanol and battery-powered ships.
Some ports, such as Visakhapatnam and New Mangalore, are already meeting their entire energy needs from renewable sources, while others, such as Paradip and Chennai, are trying to catch up. The aim is to create overall improvement by sharing best practices and innovations.
