Logistics plays a crucial role in the progress of any country and has a direct impact on the Gross Value Added in the economy. The National Logistics Policy was launched in September 2022 to complement PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. While PM GatiShakti addresses integrated development of the fixed infrastructure and network planning, the NLP addresses the soft infrastructure and logistics sector development encompassing process reforms, improvement in logistics services, digitisation, human resource development and skilling.
The policy addresses a critical need in our rapidly evolving business landscape, streamlining our fragmented logistics sector, reducing costs, and enhancing overall efficiency to boost our global competitiveness. As India endeavours to chart its course towards a USD 7 trillion economy by 2030, the National Logistics Policy stands as a key pillar of our economic strategy.
In today’s hyper-charged digital age, logistics has become the lifeblood of the digital economy. The demand for same-day deliveries, real-time tracking, and frictionless returns is the new normal. Our task now is to build infrastructure that not only supports this digital revolution but does so sustainably.
The National Logistics Policy provides an opportunity to innovate and push the boundaries of what’s possible in logistics and supply chain management. Through an integrated digital logistics system, standardisation of physical assets, benchmarking service quality standards, embracing cutting-edge technologies like AI, IoT, and blockchain, we can create a more agile, transparent, and efficient logistics ecosystem. These will help predict demand better, lead to increased fulfilment rate, optimise operations, and reduce waste across the supply chain.
KK Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director, CJ Darcl Logistics
The logistics landscape in India is being shaped by rapid expansion driven by technological advancements, supply chain transparency, and robust infrastructural frameworks. Initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti and the National Logistics Policy underscore a strategic shift towards reducing costs and enhancing efficiency. The announcement of Railway Economic Corridors during the interim budget 2024 signifies a crucial step towards connectivity and cost reduction in logistics.
As we celebrate National Logistics Day, we recognise the pivotal role of technological integration and sustainable practices in transforming India’s logistics landscape. This technology and environment-focused approach will further streamline operations, elevate productivity, refine handling processes, and enhance forecasting accuracy. This holistic perspective will not only aid in economic growth but also set a sustainable trajectory for the future of logistics in India. Together, we can shape a resilient logistics sector that not only meets current demands but also anticipates and adapts to future challenges.
Ketan Kulkarni, Chief Growth Officer, Allcargo Group
National Logistics Day acknowledges the role of the logistics sector in facilitating India’s economic development through efficient transportation of goods across the country and beyond borders. At the same time, for the industry, it’s a day to take stock of how far the industry has progressed and chart the future roadmap for growth. The policymakers have shown a continued focus on transforming the logistics industry through infrastructure and technology-led reforms.
The rollout of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, National Logistics Policy, and Unified Logistics Interface Platform are significant policy moves by the central government. As a result, India has climbed from the 44th to the 38th position out of 139 nations in 2023. The industry is now poised for the next phase of growth.
To unlock the potential, the sector requires sustained policy support and increased capex in transport as well as digital infrastructure development in particular, which will pave the way for new-age technology deployment for better capacity utilisation and mobilisation.
As India is emerging as a global manufacturing hub and the domestic ecommerce sector is growing at a faster clip, a broad-based distribution network and end-to-end supply chain visibility are crucial to meet the growing logistics transportation demand, both in the domestic and global markets. Therefore, the logistics sector must be empowered to innovate and thrive in an increasingly complex logistics and supply chain ecosystem especially in an interconnected world. An efficient and resilient logistics industry with robust multimodal connectivity, new-age digital technology adoption, and effective sustainable practices will increase the demand for India’s logistics sector, contributing to the country’s GDP growth to reach US $6 trillion by 2030.”
The logistics world is changing fast, thanks to global trade and the need for better efficiency and transparency. But it’s not just about business – geopolitical concerns are also playing a big role in shaping our industry. Every sector has its own hurdles, but what’s important is that we’re all working together to find solutions and make progress.
In logistics, we face issues like supply chain weaknesses, rising costs, sustainability requirements, and navigating international politics. But we’re tackling these head-on by becoming more resilient, using tech for efficiency, going green, and staying informed on geopolitical shifts and regulations.
In India specifically, our logistics industry is on the verge of major growth due to government focus on infrastructure development and policy changes. Initiatives like the National Logistics Policy are making regulations easier to navigate while improving connectivity across different transport modes and encouraging digitalisation – all of which will cut down costs while boosting efficiency.
As we celebrate Logistics Day, we reflect on the incredible journey of the logistics industry, which has seen remarkable evolution. Logistics is the backbone of our daily lives, a beautifully designed and well-knit supply chain that ensures everything runs smoothly. From fuelling the economy to delivering your daily cup of coffee, logistics is at the core of it all.
Global trade has long been a cornerstone of economic growth, and the recent focus on enhancing logistics within our country has provided the industry with a much-needed boost. Enhanced technology, improved infrastructure, and significant investments from both government and private sectors are driving this transformation.
As we talk about the logistics day let us also recognise the importance of continued investment in infrastructure, digitalisation, and sustainable practices to further elevate India’s logistics sector. The future is bright, and with the government’s upcoming announcements, the Indian logistics sector has much to look forward to.
While the United States celebrates National Logistics Day, we believe it is time for India to similarly honour the invaluable contributions of the logistics sector. Employing over 22 million individuals, the logistics industry is a cornerstone of our economy. By designating a day to celebrate logistics in India, we can properly acknowledge the dedication of these professionals.
This recognition was duly emphasised during the Covid pandemic as logistics became the lifeline of humanity, underscoring the significance of innovation and excellence in propelling economic growth. Through this endeavour, we aim to ensure that logistics and supply chain management remain to be a boardroom topic.
Recent policy decisions have played a crucial role in reshaping the industry, driving efficiency, sustainability, and technological advancement. The National Logistics Policy (NLP) and initiatives like Gati Shakti have provided a robust framework for integrated infrastructure development. By combining multiple transport modes and leveraging digital tools, these policies have significantly reduced transit times and costs.
Creating a sustainable, strong, and well-connected logistics network is crucial for industrial hubs to drive economic growth. The PM Gati Shakti – National Master Plan for multimodal connectivity is a step in the right direction. The government should prioritise increasing the use of railways for transporting goods. This not only makes rail the primary mode of freight transport but also promotes environmental sustainability.
Digital transformation is central to this revolution. E-invoicing and smart logistics solutions powered by AI & IoT have revolutionised operations. These technologies provide real-time tracking, predictive maintenance, and optimised route planning, ensuring seamless operations and proactive issue resolution.
Recent policy decisions have significantly bolstered the creation of Grade A warehousing stock, transforming the logistics sector. Initiatives such as the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the Make in India campaign have streamlined supply chains and fostered infrastructure growth.
As a result, the warehousing market has expanded rapidly, with Grade A facilities now accounting for approximately 40 per cent of total stock. Government investments in logistics parks and multi-modal transport hubs have also played an important role, enhancing connectivity and reducing transit times.
As per some industry records, these advancements have led to an approximate 25% increase in warehousing demand over the past three years. Furthermore, the introduction of the Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority (WDRA) has ensured higher standards and better compliance, attracting both domestic and foreign investments. These concerted efforts are paving the way for a more efficient and robust logistics infrastructure in India.
It is incredible that the logistics industry in India is growing faster than ever. From delivering essentials to connecting businesses, logistics has become the lifeline of our economy. India’s logistics sector has seen remarkable growth, projected to reach USD 215 billion by 2022, driven by infrastructure improvements and technology adoption (IBEF).
