US President Biden signs a ban on fuel imports for Russian nuclear reactors

President Joe Biden on Monday signed a law banning enriched uranium in Russia, the White House said, in Washington's latest effort to impede President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Ban imports of fuel for nuclear purposes starts power plants running Within about 90 days, although it allows the Department of Energy to issue waivers in the event of supply problems.

Russia is the world's main supplier of enriched uranium, and about 24 percent of the enriched uranium. “Today, President Biden issued a historic series of actions that will strengthen the fuel industry,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said. In a statement: “Secure the nation’s energy and economic security by reducing and ultimately eliminating our dependence on Russia for civilian nuclear energy.”

Sullivan said the law “meets the multilateral goals we have set with our allies and partners,” including This includes our commitment last December with Canada, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom to collectively invest $4.2 billion to expand uranium enrichment and conversion capacity.

The waivers, if implemented by the Department of Energy, would allow all imports of Russian uranium that the United States normally imports until The year 2027.

Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to the United States, stated that Washington’s decision will cause shocks in global economic relations, but it will not do so. “The delicate balance between exporters and importers of uranium products is being changed,” the Russian said. The embassy in Washington quoted Antonov in a post on its messaging channel on Telegram:

“Life has confirmed that the Russian economy is ready for any challenge and responds quickly to emerging difficulties, including making profits from the situation. This is how it will be.” It's the same this time."
